Table Mountain

Table Mountain, known as Tafelberg in Afrikaans, is a flat-topped mountain located in the southwestern part of South Africa. It overlooks Cape Town and Table Bay, dominating the northern tip of the rugged Cape Peninsula. The mountain's unique shape is a result of horizontal layers of sandstone exposed by wind and water erosion. A famous landmark in Cape Town, Table Mountain is a popular tourist destination offering activities such as hiking and camping.

This natural world heritage site, recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, boasts magnificent mountains that meet crystal-clear seas lined with pristine white sandy beaches on the Cape Peninsula.

Table Mountain has its own cloud cover, known as the Tablecloth, which forms quickly when the wind blows from the southeast and plays a key role in supporting the lush vegetation on the plateau. The mountain has five reservoirs that collect rainfall brought by winter winds from the northwest. The area is rich in flora, including disa orchids, 250 species of daisies, and silver trees. Wildlife on the mountain includes tahrs, which are Himalayan goats descended from escapees of a local zoo. Visitors can reach the summit using a cableway built in 1929 or by choosing one of the more than 350 designated hiking routes. The highest point on Table Mountain is Maclear’s Beacon, standing at 3,563 feet, named after a stone-cairn trigonometrical beacon placed by Sir Thomas Maclear in the 19th century.
